Description

The west portal of Gannow Tunnel, part of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, was constructed between 1797 and 1801 under the engineering of Samuel Fletcher. It is built from coursed squared punch-dressed sandstone blocks. The portal features a semicircular arch adorned with rusticated voussoirs and channelled pilasters, which are decorated with a hieroglyphic "vermiculation" pattern in the spandrels between them. There is a plain band and a coped parapet above, with slightly concave full-height abutments. An oval number plate marked "128" is located on the right-hand abutment.
