Description

The Old Vicarage is a building dating from around 1797, originally serving as stables and a coach-house for Gannow House. It was later enlarged and altered to function as a vicarage for the former Church of St John, which has since been demolished. The structure is now partly used for storage, while the domestic addition is currently derelict. Built for the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Company, the building features coursed squared sandstone and hipped slate roofs.

The layout is irregular, consisting of a former stable range oriented on a north-south axis, with a cottage attached at the north-east corner. The domestic addition is a single-depth wing at the south end, facing south. All parts of the building are two storeys tall, with cellars in the added domestic section.

The south facade of the domestic portion is symmetrical and has three windows, topped by a moulded gutter cornice. The central bay is slightly set back and includes a doorway with a plain surround, a moulded cornice, and a recessed panelled door. The vertical-rectangular windows have raised sills and plain surrounds but currently lack glazing. A tall chimney is located on the left side wall, and the right-hand return wall features one similar window on each floor.

The west facade of the stable range includes a low segmental-headed wagon doorway with plain voussoirs, a stable door at the left end, an inserted or altered window between these, and two round-headed windows above with altered glazing. The cottage at the north-east corner has a one-window front facing north with a doorway to the left, and a two-window side facing east, although there is only one window at ground level. The Old Vicarage forms a group with No. 108B, Gannow House.
