Description

The east portal of Gannow Tunnel, part of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, was constructed between 1797 and 1801 under the engineering of Samuel Fletcher. It is built from sandstone ashlar and features a semicircular arch adorned with rusticated voussoirs. The structure includes channelled pilasters that display a primitively-patterned "vermiculation," a plain band, and a coped parapet. The abutments are slightly concave and extend full height, with an oval number plate "128" located on the right-hand abutment.
