Description
St Peter’s Primary School is an early 19th-century primary school building, dated 1833, with later 19th-century extensions to the rear. It is constructed of rendered cob with a slate hipped roof. The school has a rectangular plan, and shows a simple composition with Gothick detailing. The front elevation is single-storey and has a three-window range. It features 4-centre-arched openings, with a doorway to the left. This doorway has a bottom-hinged overlight above a mid-20th century door, and early 19th century wooden windows with Y-shaped mullions. A former porch at the right-hand end had a crenellated parapet over a late 20th century plank door. An original matching porch to the left has been altered, leaving only the front wall with a segmental-arched doorway. The left-hand return has a similar 2-light window, and the right-hand return has a small-paned (4x4) casement window dating to the early 19th century. Later 19th-century rear left wings are of brick construction with hipped and gabled slate roofs. A mid-20th century flat-roofed rear right wing is also present. The interior is plain, but retains a semicircular arch framing a Y-tracery window above the former doorway to the rear right. The building is an unusual example of a school constructed with cob walls, and was built under the patronage of prominent local families.
