Description
The Poole Municipal War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1927, designed by J.A. Allner. It is constructed from Purbeck stone and red brick, featuring a tall cross set atop a tapering red brick column on a plinth. The memorial is elevated on a raised platform, surrounded by a low brick wall and accessed by three steps. The north face of the cross bears the inscription '1914/ 1918', while the south face is inscribed '1939/ 1945'. The plinth carries the inscription 'THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE WE WILL REMEMBER THEM'. Decorative stone elements include scallop shells and dolphins, which are part of the Poole coat of arms, located at the top of the memorial.
The memorial was unveiled on October 16, 1927, to honor the men from the town who lost their lives in the First World War, with additional inscriptions later added for those who died in the Second World War. Allner was responsible for designing several other buildings in Poole. The memorial is situated within formal gardens and hedging, approached from the north via a flagged pathway that leads to ornate wrought iron gates at the park's entrance. Poole Park also features additional memorials, including one for the Burma Star Association and another for Lord Mountbatten, added in the late 20th century.
The Poole Municipal War Memorial is designated for its cultural and historical significance, serving as a poignant reminder of the impact of world events on the local community. Despite its simplicity, it is an elegant and dignified monument that enhances the surrounding area.
