Description

Holt's Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house, likely built in the late 17th century, with a later addition at the rear. The structure is made of coursed sandstone blocks and features a stone slate roof with a brick chimney. It has a three-unit lobby-entry plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic.

The front of the cottage has a symmetrical arrangement of openings, although they are offset to the right. There is a doorway with a chamfered surround located at the junction of the second and third bays, which is protected by a modern wooden porch. This doorway is flanked by two square windows on each floor, all with plain surrounds and 12-pane top-hung casements. The ground floor windows have pseudo-shutters, while the first bay on the left side has the remains of a blocked window at ground level. The gable ends have copings with kneelers, and the ridge chimney is aligned with the door.

On the left gable wall, there are inserted openings at ground level beneath a modern pentice, and former two-light mullioned windows on the first floor and attic. The lower window lacks the mullion, while the upper window is blocked, both featuring straight dripstones. The upper window has a raised chamfered sill, which may have served as a pigeon perch. The added rear wing, likely built in the early 19th century, appears to have been two cottages and is not of special interest.

Inside, the cottage features chamfered spine beams in the first and second bays, and there are back-to-back rectangular fireplaces. The fireplace in the main living area was once equipped with a spit that was suspended from a rail still attached to the beam above.
