Description
Hessle Old Hall is a farmhouse, now a house, dated 1641 on the lintel of the door. It has been restored and altered. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with quoins and features a stone slate roof. It is designed in an L-plan, consisting of a two-unit end-lobby-entry range with a rear outshut and a very prominent projecting wing, which may be an early addition.
The main range is two storeys high, while the wing is 2½ storeys. The doorway at the right-hand end of the main range has a chamfered surround and a Tudor-arched lintel inscribed with "1641 SP," with the "4" inscribed in reverse. To the left of the doorway, there is a 3-light window with a lowered sill and extended mullions, along with a 2-light mullioned window above it. The masonry of the wing overlaps the left end of the lintel of the ground-floor window, while at the first floor, the masonry of the main range abuts that of the wing.
The wing features a chamfered plinth, and its gable wall has two 3-light windows on each floor, with each pair under a single hoodmould, plus one similar window in the attic, also with a hoodmould. The east gable of the main range has an extruded chimney stack with two diagonal chimneys, and both gables have copings with kneelers. The left return wall of the wing has a large corbelled chimney at the first floor. The west gable of the main range is made of modern masonry with openings in a 17th-century style.
At the rear, there is a plain doorway to the first bay, two 2-light windows at ground floor, a 2-light stair window in the centre, and an inserted dormer window in the second bay. The interior has not been inspected but is believed to contain some features of interest.
