Description

C B Yard is a late 18th or early 19th century complex of two rows of houses and stables forming a right angle, located in Arkengarthdale, North Yorkshire. The buildings are constructed of rubble with stone slate roofs.

The main range consists of eight houses arranged in unequal pairs. The first pair has three first-floor windows. It features quoins on the left side, 20th-century casement windows, a boarded door in bay one, a boarded door with a three-pane fanlight between bays two and three, ashlar copings, and stacks between bays one and two at the right end. The second pair comprises two cottages. Westbrook has two first-floor windows, a 20th-century casement window on the ground floor, and four-pane sash windows on the first floor. The second cottage has two first-floor windows, a large 20th-century casement window on the ground floor, a four-panel door below a fanlight, and casement windows on the first floor, with a stack between the cottages. The third pair has four first-floor windows, quoins, a casement window and a 20th-century three-panel door on the ground floor, a glazed door, a blocked window, one sash-type casement window with glazing bars on the ground floor, two sashes with glazing bars and two sash-type casements on the first floor, shaped kneeler and coping to the left, and end stacks. The fourth pair features two first-floor windows, a casement window, a 20th-century three-panel door, a 20th-century casement, a single-storey extension with a door and a window on the ground floor, and 20th-century casements on the first floor, with a stack at the right end.

A secondary range includes two cottages, stables, and outbuildings. Windegg View has two first-floor windows with glazing bars, a central 20th-century six-panel door, and end stacks, with a single-storey extension projecting to the left. Rydal House has three first-floor windows, 20th-century casements on the ground floor flanking a 20th-century five-panel door, a four-pane sash window on the first floor, and end stacks. To the right is a long range of stables and farm buildings with ten first-floor openings, featuring windows and pitching doors.

C B Yard was associated with the C B lead smelting mills located nearby. It represents an important survival of the historic lead-mining industry in the Swaledale district and has group value with the Old Powder Magazine. The range of single-storey buildings across the yard and the former saw-mill behind the lower range are not considered to be of special architectural or historical interest.
