Description
Punchard Toll House is a toll bar cottage from the late 18th century, currently used for agricultural purposes. It is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof and is a single-storey building located at the roadside. The building features a blocked window and a doorway that has been converted into a small window opening, while another doorway is also blocked. A ridge chimney remains at the right end, and the roof has been raised at the rear. Inside, there is a living room with a fireplace for a kitchen range on the left and an office with a smaller fireplace on the right. This toll point is depicted on the first edition 6-inch Ordnance Survey map from 1857, marking it as a rare and relatively unaltered example from the turnpike road era in Richmondshire.
