Description
The Old Powder Magazine is a Grade II* listed building located in Arkengarthdale, dating from around 1804. Originally built to store black powder for the nearby C B lead-mines established by Charles Bathurst, it is now used for agricultural purposes. The structure is hexagonal in shape, constructed from rubble with flush quoins and features a stone slate roof. It has a gabled porch with projecting kneelers on the side that once faced the C B smelting mills. The building is single-storey, with one side containing an inserted sash window with glazing bars, while the other sides have blank windows with rounded heads and projecting keystones. The roof has shaped kneelers and triangular copings leading to a pyramidal main roof, topped with a ball finial at the apex. Inside, the building is plastered and ceiled, and there was a second doorway on the side opposite the porch. This unique structure is a significant remnant of the lead-mining industry in Arkengarthdale and demonstrates notable design qualities.
