Description

This building is a row of shops located on Matlock Street in Bakewell, dating from the mid-19th century. It features various later shop fronts and is constructed of ashlar sandstone with limestone rubble at the rear, topped with a Welsh slate roof.

The exterior consists of three storeys and an eight-window range, with a two-storey, single-bay addition on the left. There is a first-floor sill band and projecting stone sills for the second-floor windows, which have plain lintels. The windows in bays one to four are 6/6 sashes, while bays five to eight have 8/8 sashes. Bay four includes a carriage entrance with a cambered lintel, and there are doors off the passageway with channelled architraves and corner blocks. The added bay on the far left also has a carriage entrance with a wooden beam and a 6/6 sash window on the first floor.

The shop fronts include Wards Shoe Shop, which has a central door flanked by plate-glass windows and fluted pilasters. Woodcock Travel features fluted pilasters, colonnettes, and a recessed door on the right beneath an angled fascia with consoles. The Suit Shop and Westcourt Insurance Services have paired frontages, with altered windows at The Suit Shop. These frontages include pilasters, angled fascias with shaped consoles featuring gablets, and transomed plate-glass windows at Westcourt Insurance Services, which also has spandrel brackets and a recessed doorway on the right. The row is topped with an eaves band and has five broad ridge stacks, two of which are in red brick while the others have been rebuilt in blue brick. The interior has not been inspected.
