Description
This listing describes a row of shops located on Matlock Street in Bakewell, dating from the early 19th century. The buildings consist of two structures with various later shop fronts. They are constructed from deeply-coursed dressed sandstone, with some limestone at the rear, and feature a Welsh slate roof.
The exterior is three storeys high and has an eight-window range, with a broad wing extending to the rear left. Notable architectural details include large quoins at the left end and between the third and fourth bays, as well as above the adjacent premises at the right end. The windows have projecting stone sills and plain surrounds. The first three bays, along with the seventh and eighth, feature 8/8 sash windows beneath 4/8 sashes, while the fourth to sixth bays have 20th-century casements.
The shop fronts include a plate-glass front for Lady Fair, which has an ashlar surround to the doorway on the right. The Bakewell Fabric Shop has a part-glazed door under a stone hood supported by shaped brackets, with a nine-pane shop window on the left and an 8/8 sash window to the right, along with a side-passage doorway beyond. The Bakewell Factory Shop features a central door flanked by plate-glass windows in a framed surround, with a side doorway on the right that has been converted into a window. The row is topped with a moulded stone cornice above the sixth to eighth bays. The hipped roof has two corniced ashlar ridge stacks on the right, and a ridge louvre and truncated stack on the left.
At the rear, there is a corniced ashlar stack at the junction of the rear wing and the main roof, along with a tall stair window featuring glazing bars.
Inside, the Lady Fair shop retains its original staircase, which has a mahogany handrail supported by square rods and turned newels. Sylvia's also has a similar early 19th-century staircase aligned with the rear wall.
