Description

This building is a row of shops located on Matlock Street in Bakewell, dating from around 1800, with various later shop fronts. The structure is made of deeply-coursed sandstone with ashlar dressings, a rubble limestone rear, and features a roof of stone slate and concrete tiles.

The exterior consists of three storeys with a nine-window range under a single roofline. It has large quoins, and the first and second floors display projecting stone sills beneath plain window surrounds. The windows include 6/6 sashes beneath 4/8 sashes in bays 1-4, 8/8 sashes beneath 4/8 sashes in bays 5, 6, 8, and 9, and 2/2 sashes in bay 7. Bay 3 features a basket-arched carriage entrance with imposts and iron gates that have spear-finialled dog bars, a spiked mid-rail, and ball cresting on the curved top rails.

The shop fronts include Temptations, which has an ashlar central doorway flanked by plate-glass windows. The Interior Design shop has corniced ashlar surrounds to its window, with the left doorway converted to a window. C Farmer Ltd has a late 20th-century front. Skidmores, dating from around 1900, features fluted wooden pilasters and a panelled door reveal on the left, with an angled fascia between consoles. The Country Life Shop has a 20th-century door in an ashlar surround to the left of a plate-glass window. The building also has various brick ridge stacks and an ashlar end stack with a band on the far right. The interior has not been inspected.
