Description

Catcliffe House, now used as offices, dates from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of coursed sandstone with ashlar sandstone dressings and features a stone slate roof. The building is three storeys high and has a symmetrical facade with three windows and a rear wing. Notable exterior features include chamfered rustication on the quoins, ground-floor openings, and the central first-floor window. The ground floor has a sill band interrupted by a central doorway, which contains a six-panel door with an overlight beneath a triangular pediment. The first-floor sill band connects the pedimented central window to the plain surrounds of the outer windows. The ground and first floors have 1/1 sash windows, while the second floor features projecting sills and ashlar surrounds for three-light casements. A corbel table supports the moulded eaves cornice, and there are ashlar gable copings and end stacks. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is known to include a shallow rake staircase with a wooden handrail and a margin-glazed stair window with coloured glass. Additionally, there is a small enclosure beneath the ground-floor window to the left of the elevation, which has restored spear-headed railings.
