Description

The building at 9-17 Broad Street, Newent, is a group of shops and offices likely dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the early and late 19th century and the 20th century. The front facade is rendered and designed to resemble ashlar stonework, while the rear is timber-framed. The roof is tiled.

The building is two windows wide and two rooms deep, arranged over two stories, with attics above. A plate-glass shop front occupies the left side, with a central entrance doorway featuring green-glazed tiles to the stallboard. The doorway is flanked by framed pilasters with consoles supporting a panelled blocking piece with a semi-circular head, creating the appearance of ends to a blind box. A half-glazed door provides access to offices in the centre, and a similar shop front extends to the right, with a doorway on its left. Above the shop fronts, the left side has a twin two-light casement window with one iron opening light. The right side features a three-light casement window. The building has wide eaves, and a gabled dormer is present on the left with a single two-light casement window, with two similar windows to the right. A square brick chimney, built in two phases, rises from the central ridge.

At the rear, the left-hand side retains exposed timber framing while the right-hand side has a lean-to extension. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
