Description

The Friends Meeting House in Bakewell is a Quaker meeting house built in 1852. It is constructed from coursed dressed sandstone and features a Welsh slate roof. The building is single storey with a combination of three and two-window ranges and has a plinth. A later porch is located between the second and third bays, supported by twinned ashlar pilasters and topped with a pedimented wooden gable, with ashlar side walls. The original structure includes large windows with projecting stone sills and wedge lintels, each fitted with fixed 12-pane lights and pivoting 8-pane openers. A lintel at the center of the building reads 'ERECTED 1852'. The roof has boxed eaves and is hipped. At the rear, there are various lean-tos and an ashlar stack at the eaves. The right return features 9-pane casements on two levels. Inside, the original space has been divided and the gallery removed, but the current meeting room still has the elders' bench with panelling across the front.
