Description

Nos. 30, 32 and 34, Hamilton Street form a terrace of three shops dating from around 1840. The buildings are constructed with an ashlar facade over brick, and have a Welsh slate roof. They are three storeys high, with a six-window front. The left-hand unit has rusticated ashlar on the ground floor, featuring a central door and windows divided by a transom. The lintels above the ground floor windows have stressed keystones. A string course follows the line of the window transoms. The central unit has late 20th-century windows, possible replacing an earlier 19th-century shop front, with a moulded fascia supported by pilasters. No. 30 has an early 20th-century shop front, designed as a post office, featuring a doorway to the left with a high segmental archway and a wide, segmentally arched window to the right. A low relief carving displaying a number sits above the doorway, and there is a stone cornice above the shop front. The first floor windows are 12-pane sashes, with entablatures supported by console brackets, and cast-iron balconies with acanthus decoration are present on Nos. 30 and 32. Smaller windows are located in the attic storey. A moulded eaves cornice is present, along with end wall and axial stacks.
