Description

Greenbank Farmhouse and Cottage is a pair of houses dated 1663, as indicated by the lintel. The building is constructed of roughcast stone and has a slate roof. It stands two storeys high and has four bays, with the first bay serving as a cottage. Most windows are sashed with glazing bars and horns, although the ground floor of the cottage and the first floor of the third bay feature small paned fixed glazing with top-hung lights. The cottage has an entrance at the return of a gabled porch, while the house has a half-glazed door beneath a dated lintel with flanking console brackets, and a porch under an asymmetrical gable with a four-fielded-panel door. There are gable-end stacks and a large cross-axial stack. The rear of the building has two gabled wings made of stone rubble, with the left wing projecting. Casement windows are present in these wings.

Inside, there is a stone fireplace with a corbelled lintel, a moulded opening, and a cornice. The staircase features fluted square newels, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail, along with fielded panelling and flat fluted pilasters. The first floor retains original two-panel doors. The cottage includes ovolo beams, a fireplace with fielded panelling above the bressummer, and an inserted stair. An inventory from 1723 mentions a new kitchen.
