Description

LOWER ALLITHWAITE CARTMEL SD 38 SE 1269-/2/10001 Stone Boundary Wall incorporating two sets of Bee Boles, Beckside Cottage II Stone boundary wall, incorporating two sets of bee boles. C19. Rubble Lakeland stone, brought to courses, with irregular rough coping stones. The wall at its south-west end incorporates a set of five bee boles, comprising five rectangular chambers, subdivided by shallow upright stones standing on flat padstones. Spanning the chambers are two long lintol stones, which carry further wall courses and coping stones above. The front faces of the upright stones have been drilled to house fixtures by which the hives could be secured from theft. Further to the north-east a further two boles, of larger size, with a single upright divider stone carry irregular lintol stones.
