Description

The Grammar Hotel, originally known as The Grammar School, is a hotel built in the 1790s, with extensions added in 1862 and later. The building features roughcast stone with stone dressings, while the 1862 sections are made of coursed slate with limestone dressings, topped with hipped slate roofs. The south facade is two storeys high and consists of the original four bays, with a two-bay extension to the left where the second bay projects forward under a gable. The original section has rusticated quoins and a string course.

The ground floor has round-headed windows, while the first floor features segmental-headed windows, all with plaster surrounds, imposts, and triple keys; the glazing is from the 20th century and has small panes. The entrance in the first bay is round-headed, with glazed doors and a fanlight that includes glazing bars. The first two bays have a sill band on the first floor, and the windows are sashed with vertical glazing bars. The second bay includes a canted bay window with a hipped roof. A datestone is located on the gable.

There are two cross-axial stacks and a return lateral stack. The left return has three bays similar to the front, with plaster aprons on the windows; the central entrance features a timber porch and a 20th-century door within a glazed doorcase. The right return has a small single-storey extension with pedimented gables facing south and east, a round-headed window to the south, and a round-headed window above a blocked door. At the rear, there is a later two-storey range with three bays, featuring top-hung casements on the north side. The north elevation of the original part includes a 20th-century lean-to extension with a lean-to extension on the first floor that has continuous glazing and segmental-headed windows. To the right, there are two bays with sashes and casements.
