Description

Anvil Cottage, along with its outbuilding and the Old Smithy, is located on Priest Lane in Lower Allithwaite, Cartmel. This building likely dates from the late 18th century and features later additions. It is constructed of stone rubble and has a slate roof. The north elevation is two storeys high with two bays, and the outbuilding projects to the left under a single-pitch roof. The windows are sashed and include glazing bars. The entrance to the second bay has an architrave and a six-fielded-panel door, which is partially glazed. The outbuilding has two entrances with board doors, one of which has vertical vents. The right return of the building is curved to follow the street line and features two bays of sashed windows with glazing bars, along with a blocked opening.

The Old Smithy consists of three bays, with the third bay being an extension that is recessed and has a single-storeyed gabled projection. The ground floor windows have small-paned fixed glazing and shutter pegs, while the first floor windows are sashed with single glazing bars and horns; the window in the first bay has vertical glazing bars. There are three entrances: the first bay serves as a garage entrance, the second bay has a wide-boarded door, and there is a cross-axial stack along with two gable-end stacks. The rear of the building features small-paned fixed glazing with opening lights.
