Description

Anvil Cottage and the adjoining cottage on the right are two cottages likely built in the early 18th century. They are constructed from rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, topped with a rag slate roof that has a hipped end on the left and a gable end on the right. The right cottage features a stone rubble end stack, while a rendered axial stack is located near the center.

The layout of Anvil Cottage on the left consists of a two-room and cross passage plan, with a larger hall-kitchen on the right and a smaller unheated room on the left. A 19th-century outshut has been added to the rear. The adjoining cottage on the right has a one-room and passage plan, with the entrance on the left and the heated room on the right served by an end stack. A 20th-century extension has been added to the rear, creating a two-room plan.

Both cottages are two storeys high and feature a regular arrangement of windows. Anvil Cottage has an almost centrally placed entrance with a part-glazed 20th-century door set in a 19th-century stone rubble porch with a lean-to roof. This entrance is flanked by 19th-century two-light casements. The first floor has a 19th-century one-light casement to the left and a two-light casement to the right. The adjoining cottage on the right has a 20th-century door to the left and 20th-century windows on both the ground and first floors, fitted into the original openings.

The interior of the right-hand cottage has 20th-century ceiling beams, while the interior of Anvil Cottage has not been inspected.
