Description
Mill and adjoining barn at Newmills Farm, probably built in the early 19th century. The structure is made of stone rubble with brick dressings and granite quoins, topped with a rag slate roof that has a hipped end on the left and a gable end on the right. There is a lower range attached on the right with a half hipped right-hand end.
The mill has a rectangular plan and is built into the bank at the rear. It features an overshot water wheel on the left side, which originally powered two pairs of millstones. The hurst frame extends the full height of the meal floor, which has a stone floor and a loft floor. The adjoining outbuilding on the right is also of overall rectangular plan, with a shippon on the ground floor and a loft above.
The exterior consists of a three-storey mill and a two-storey outbuilding. The mill has a roughly symmetrical facade, with 19th-century plank double doors in the center, flanked by a 20th-century window on the left and a two-light casement on the right. On the first floor, there are two two-light casements and gabled full dormers that light the loft floor. The lower range on the right has a central shippon door flanked by two sash windows, with a loft door above the entrance also flanked by two 19th-century one-light casements. A metal water wheel on the left side of the mill is dated 1905 and is marked T. Coome + Son, Launceston, along with a complete launder and leat.
Inside, there is a timber hurst frame along the rear of the mill, extending the full height of the meal floor. Some machinery remains, including parts of two pairs of millstones. The stone floor was filled with hay bales at the time of inspection, and the sack hoist appears to have been removed. The adjoining outbuilding features slate uprights that divide the stalls on the ground floor.
