Description

Hillside is a house, likely dating to the late 17th century. It is constructed of rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, with a rag slate roof and stone rubble end stacks, the right-hand stack projecting and incorporating a clay oven projection. Originally, the house comprised two rooms and a through passage, warmed by end stacks, with a larger hall-kitchen on the higher right-hand side. A circa 19th-century outshut was added to the rear of the right-hand room, and a late 20th-century extension of a single-room plan was added to the rear of the left-hand room.

The house has an asymmetrical 4-window front. The entrance is near the centre, accessed via a 20th-century open gabled slate-hung porch containing a two-light casement, a one-light casement, and two further two-light casements. Above, there are four two-light casements, predominantly 20th-century replacements with timber lintels. Inside, the fireplace lintels have been replaced, and the floor joists above the left-hand room also date to the 20th century. Some roughly cut, unmoulded floor joists survive in part in the right-hand room and are thought to be late 17th or early 18th century in origin. The ground slopes towards the left.
