Description

Broughton Hall is a house dating back to the 17th century, largely reconstructed in about 1840. It is built of roughcast stone with slate roofs. The building is two storeys high and five bays wide, with the first two bays set back and lower in height. It features wide, modillioned eaves with moulded gutters. The first two bays have small windows, one of which is a fixed window with a small opening light, while the others are sash windows with vertical glazing bars and horns. The remaining three bays have sash windows, those on the first floor having vertical glazing bars and horns. The entrance, in the fourth bay, is a timber porch with a Tudor arch and pediment. The inner entrance has chamfered reveals and an embattled lintel. There are three gable-end stacks. The left return has two two-light, single-chamfered mullioned windows with labels to the attic. The rear of the house has a stair bay projecting forward, with a round-headed window containing small-paned glazing, and a further round-headed window with small-paned glazing to the left. A gabled bay projects forward, adjoining a later gabled wing that has a small, lean-to outshut to the left and a three-bay lean-to outshut to the right, with sash windows and glazing bars. Inside, there is a food cupboard with diaper-pattern ventilation holes, a fireplace with an embattled lintel, a winding stair, and part of a stair with square newels and turned balusters. Also present are a six-panel door with a moulded rail and a wide-boarded door.
