Milestone Cottage

Milestone Cottage is a small house dating back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century and minor changes in the late 20th century. It has two bays and one-and-a-half storeys, with a lean-to addition on the gable end. The front wall is painted brick in a Flemish bond, with a stone plinth, while the back wall is timber-framed and brick-nogged. The roof is covered in concrete plain tiles. The front has a boarded door with a glass panel in the upper half, set within a cambered brick arch, positioned slightly left of centre. To either side of the door are three-light casement windows, also with cambered brick arches. The rendered end of the right gable frames the front, while the left gable retains earlier brickwork. A large lean-to with a clay tile roof extends from the left side, and a two-light casement window is located in a dormer above. A brick chimney sits on the ridge at the left gable, and an external brick chimney is on the right. The rear wall exhibits timber framing, reaching two panels high, with an angle brace running from the corner post to the wallplate. Inside, the room on the right features exposed chamfered ceiling joists, while the room on the left has wide chamfered ceiling beams. An original boarded door and hinges are present on the first floor. Part of a timber-framed roof truss remains in the right gable, including one pair of purlins, originally with wind braces. The roof was reportedly thatched until 1938.
