Description

Cross Keys is a cottage that may date back to the 15th or early 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It features painted brick construction, with the left part of the front in English bond and brick infilled timber-framing in the gable. The roof is tiled.

The front has three windows and a single bay extension on the left, standing one and a half storeys tall and one room deep. There is a boarded door behind a half-glazed wooden porch, with boarding above the gable. To the left, there is a 2-light window with an elliptical brick arch and small panes, consistent with all other front windows. To the right of the door is a 3-light casement window without a lintel. A vertical joint in the wall leads to another boarded door under a cambered brick arch, next to a similar 3-light casement window.

On the right side, there is a lean-to against the gable with a thin timber tie beam and a boarded door. Above, there are two gabled dormers in the left section, each with a 2-light casement. A gable chimney is located at the left end, with another chimney extending from the front eaves by the vertical joint, which is external on the right return. The top of what is likely a cruck truss is visible over the lean-to roof on the right return. The left end has a brick lean-to against the gable, with a set-back brick wing, a boarded door under a cambered brick arch, and a slit air vent to the left. The interior has not been inspected.
