Description
The Orchards is a former inn, now a house, likely built in the mid to late 18th century and altered in the early 19th century. It features Flemish bond brickwork and a slate roof, with a tiled roof on the wing. The building is three windows wide, with 2 and a half storeys above a basement and is 2 rooms deep, while a 1 and a half storey wing is located on the right.
The central entrance has a nine-panel front door, with the top three panels glazed, and is sheltered by a flat hood. Access is via 11 stone steps leading to a quarter landing, where the lowest seven steps are wider and accompanied by a simple iron handrail. On either side of the entrance are single-storey canted bays with sash windows and hipped lead roofs.
To the right bay, there are double boarded doors leading to the cellar, each with a glass pane in the upper half. The first floor features three sash windows with cambered brick arches. The building has dentil eaves and an M-shaped roof with a small valley. There are external chimneys on the front ridge, with a larger one on the left and a smaller one on the rear gable, both having rendered offsets at the first floor level.
Between the chimneys, there is a three-light casement window in the loft, with an iron opening light. The low wing set back on the right has two boarded doors with cambered brick arches, a two-light casement window with a similar head between them, and a boarded door in a gabled dormer above. The wing extends towards the road and has been partly altered to form a garage. The Orchards occupies a prominent position along the road.
