Description
The cross by Maisemore Bridge was built in 1851 by Fulljames and Waller and was re-erected in 1956. It is made of ashlar stone and features a gabled wall. The design includes a moulded top to the plinth, a recessed panel for lettering, and crossed keys on a shield above. The parapet gable has a cross-gablet apex, leaves on the ridge, and a floriate stone cross with an open circle above. An inscription in Roman lettering reads: 'THIS CROSS WAS TAKEN FROM / ST. MICHAEL'S CHURCH / GLOUCESTER IN 1956 / A CROSS WHICH STOOD ON A / BRIDGE BUILT ABOUT A.D. 1200 / BORE THIS INSCRIPTION IN LATIN & NORMAN FRENCH / "IN HONOUR OF / OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST / WHO WAS CRUCIFIED FOR US / WILLIAM FITZ-ANKETIL / OF WILTON MADE THIS CROSS / AND THIS SAME / WILLIAM FITZ-ANKETIL / BUILT THE BRIDGE OF / MAISEMORE." 'E.L. CHANT' is cut on the base. The cross is listed mainly for its historical significance.
