Description
The Vallender and Syms monuments are chest tombs located in the churchyard about 7 meters south of the east end of the nave of the Church of St. Giles. These tombs date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and are made of stone. The northern tomb is dedicated to the Vallender family and features a weathered top with a step to the lid, a square-cut edge, and inset crenellated moulding. The sides have recessed oval shapes with fluted corners and are set back at each end with a reeded fan design. The ends of the tomb mirror the sides and it has a stepped base. This monument commemorates Thomas Vallender, though the date is illegible, and his wife Esther, who died in 1779, with later inscriptions indicating that the date of the monument may be 1842. To the south is the N. Syms monument, which commemorates a death in 1799. This tomb has a flat lid with a moulded edge, raised panels on each side, and wide pilasters at the ends, with a raised panel on the stem. The plinth has a moulded top and a stone base at ground level, along with later inscriptions.
