Description
Mermaid Cottage is a small house that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the late 16th, 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It features brick nogged timber-framing, Flemish-bond brickwork, and an asbestos-slate roof. The building has four bays and is one and a half storeys tall, with a depth of one room.
On the left side, the framing consists of two panels high, with the end brick gable overlapping the corner post and a long brace extending to the sill. To the right, there is a two-light casement window and a long half-glazed porch that includes a door on the left, which covers the front door. There is a cambered timber head above a blocked door to the right, with a two-light casement window above it. The right side has framing that is three panels high, with slighter timbers. This side features a half-glazed door and a two-light casement window in a rectangular oriel. A brick lean-to is attached to the right gable, which has a boarded door.
Above, there are three lean-to dormers; the left pair has two-light casements, while the right has a three-light casement. A brick chimney is located on the ridge of the right gable, and there was previously a lateral chimney on the rear left side.
Inside, there is a full cruck truss to the left of the door from the porch, and a similar truss for the half-hip to the right. The interior features heavily-moulded longitudinal and wall beams for an inserted floor in the left two bays, which date from the late 16th century. The cross beam in the right section has a heavy chamfer. Originally, it was a two-bay cruck cottage that was later floored and extended by two narrower bays to the right in the 17th century.
