Description
Street End Cottage is a cottage from the mid to late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It features brick-nogged timber framing and painted brickwork, with the oldest sections having an irregular bond. The roof is covered with asbestos slate. The cottage is four bays wide and one and a half stories tall, with a depth of one room. It has a gable facing the road and the back towards the lane. The framing on the lane side is spindly, with two irregular panels high. A beam end projects through the second stud from the right, with a straight brace connecting to the wallplate. There is a three-light casement window and a straight brace to the wallplate. To the left, there is a brick bay with a small window, which has been extended in a cavity wall for a narrow bay that includes a two-light casement with small panes. Above the brick section, there is a lean-to dormer with two-light casements featuring small panes. A chimney is located on the ridge at the left end of the framing. The gable on the right return has brick infill between the main posts and principal rafters, with a small window on the ground floor and a two-light casement above. Inside, there is a wide brick fireplace on the ground floor, and the original stairs are likely adjacent. The trusses do not have tie beams, and the principal rafters are tenoned to braces that extend from the top of the wall post down to the floor beam, with one pair of purlins and windbraces. The cottage was probably originally two bays and was enlarged by one bay towards the road. A later lean-to against the gable was replaced in the 1970s with a narrow bay. The roof was originally thatched. The cottage forms a group with Snowdrop Cottage.
