Description

The Post Office and General Store is a shop and house located at the end of a row on High Street in South Woodchester. It dates from the early 18th century and underwent remodelling and enlargement in the early 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed rubble limestone and features an artificial stone rebuilt chimney and a stone slate roof.

It is two stories high with an attic and cellar. The front facade has four windows, all with segmental arches, and a linking ashlar band at the ground floor. The windows include a mix of doors and casements, with three 12-pane sash windows on the upper floor and a casement in a reduced opening above the shop doorway. A ridge-mounted chimney is positioned at the north end of the roof, which has a hipped southwest corner.

On the south end, there is a return wing that features a leaded casement in the attic dormer, with scattered casements below. The rear of the building has two gables; the left gable is the end of the return wing, while the right gable is the end of an earlier building. This gable has single-window fenestration, with a 2-light window in the cellar, a 3-light window on the ground and upper floors, and a 2-light window in the attic, all of which have hoodmoulds.
