Description
Spinners is a house situated on the east side of High Street in South Woodchester. It dates to the late 17th century, though it was significantly enlarged and refaced in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of random and coursed rubble limestone, with brick rebuilt chimneys and a concrete replacement tile roof.
The original section is found on the left-hand side of the front and shows random rubble with evidence of raised eaves. It features a casement with a concrete lintel to the ground floor, and a two-light chamfered mullioned casement above with a hoodmould. The right-hand side was rebuilt in the 19th century, displaying a two-window front with segmental arched windows on the ground floor, featuring a dressed stone linking band, stone lintels to the upper floor, and leaded timber cross windows. A central doorway features a cambered timber porch on attenuated posts, leading to a six-panel fielded door within a segmental arched opening.
The north end has a gabled appearance, with signs of a steeper roof pitch. The upper floor and attic contain two-light chamfered mullioned casements with hoodmoulds, all with leaded glass. The rear elevation has a three-window arrangement with 12-pane sash windows, and a six-pane window in the attic gable.
The interior was not inspected, but a staircase is visible to the right of the doorway, characterised by stick balusters and a scrolled open string.
