Description

South Cottage and North Cottage are a pair of cottages, originally three houses in a row, dating from the early to mid-18th century. They are located on the west side of High Street, South Woodchester. The buildings are constructed of coursed and random rubble limestone with black pointing, and have brick chimneys and a stone slate roof.

The cottages are two storeys with an attic, and include a small single-storey section at the south end. The front elevation has a two-window arrangement to each house. Windows are a mix of timber casements, with some upper floor iron casements, one within North Cottage featuring leading. All windows have timber lintels; the lintel over the doorway of North Cottage combines with a casement window to its right, which was formerly a door position. Another casement window is located to the right. Plank doors are present. Two casements feature in the single-storey section of South Cottage. Two raking roof dormers are visible. Chimneys rise from the ridge of the roof. The interior has not been inspected. Small archival records indicate restoration work carried out by the Period Cottage Improvement Society in 1963.
