Watts Monument,About 24M North Of North Porch Door In Churchyard Of Church Of St Mary The Virgin

Watts Monument is a chest tomb located about 24 meters north of the north porch door in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. It dates from the late 18th century, with the earliest decipherable inscription dating to 1770. The tomb is made of limestone and has a lozenge shape with rounded ends. It features a flat top, a moulded plinth, and capping on a large base that is built up on bricks to the west. The ends of the tomb have a fluted frieze and a spiral astragal and torus, with a snake and urn with an oval panel on the west side and foliage on the east side. The remaining four sides have tall oval panels surrounded by foliage carvings and inscriptions. At the time of the survey in November 1984, the base was breaking up in the center.
