Description

There are two unidentified monuments located about 2 meters north of Watts Monument in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin. The southern monument is a chest tomb from the early to mid-18th century, while the northern monument dates from the late 17th century. Both are made of limestone and feature flat tops, with a moulded plinth and capping on the base of the southern tomb. The southern tomb has indented corners and a fluted frieze adorned with rosettes. The ends of this tomb display a crossed key and torch on the west side, and a semi-obliterated device on the east. The sides are decorated with ovals that have rosettes in the spandrels, although the frieze is deteriorating on the eastern side. The northern tomb has recessed panels, with the sides divided into two sections and relief strips in between. This monument is also showing signs of deterioration, particularly on the north side.
