Description

Watts and an unidentified monument are located about 8 meters west of the south-west buttress of the tower in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin. These are two chest tombs: one commemorates James Watts, who died in 1806, and the other is of unidentified origin from the early 19th century. Both are made of limestone and feature flat tops with moulded plinths and capping. The Watts monument stands on a large base that was formerly railed and has indented corners. The ends display a diamond frieze and oval panels, with a draped urn on the east side and a flaming torch in an urn on the west side. The sides have large oval inscription panels adorned with swags, with the inscription located on the north side. The unidentified monument is set on a smaller base with quarter baluster corners and sunk oval end panels. Its sides have raised ovals featuring rosettes in the spandrels, but the inscriptions are indecipherable. Notably, the south-east corner of the Watts monument is missing.
