Description

The Tower of the Church of St. Mary is a free-standing church tower built in 1753, which replaced a 15th-century tower on the site. It is constructed of ashlar stone and sits on the plinth of the original tower, which likely formed part of an abbey church. The tower is designed in the Gothic Survival Perpendicular style and consists of three stages with offsets and diagonal buttresses. Each face features two large pointed arch openings per stage, all of which are blind except for the first stage on the west side. This first stage is subdivided into four arched panels, with slit openings on the second stage and louvred belfry openings on the third stage. A clock face is located on the west side of the second stage. The corners of the tower are adorned with panelled square pinnacles topped with finials, and there is an openwork battlemented parapet between them. Access to the tower is through a central pointed arch door on the south side, which is reached by two stone steps.
