Description

The Bell Tower of the Church of St. Mary Magdalen is a Grade I listed detached bell tower with a spire, dating from around 1300. It was restored in 1798 and again in 1843. The tower is constructed of limestone ashlar and comprises three stages, featuring a plinth and a moulded string course.

The structure has multi-stage angle buttresses, with a north-east polygonal stair turret that includes ogee-headed and trefoil-headed slit lights. The east doorway is pointed and has a double chamfered head, a hood mould, and double plank doors. Above the doorway, there is a cusped ogee-headed lancet and a clock. The south side features a pointed Y-traceried window with a hood mould and an ogee-headed lancet above it. The west and north sides each have a single ogee-headed, cusped lancet.

All four sides of the tower have bell openings, each featuring a pointed richly moulded opening that contains two pointed, cusped lights with a transom and a quatrefoil, with a hood mould that runs into the string course. The moulded eaves are adorned with small grotesque heads and two projecting heads on each side. The battlements are embellished with ornate corner pinnacles and small cusped flyers. The recessed octagonal spire has three tiers of small quatrefoil lucarnes on alternating sides, topped with a finial and weathervane. The interior does not contain any notable special features.
