Description
The remains of the Church of St Mary consist of the western tower, which dates to the 15th century and includes earlier materials. The tower is square in plan and constructed from knapped flint with stone dressings, as well as Roman or early medieval brick.
The exterior features an unbuttressed, roofless tower that is the sole surviving part of the church. It has three stages, marked by chamfered string courses. The third stage, or belfry, contains two-light cusped bell openings with hood-moulds and carved label stops on each side. On the east elevation, the three-centred tower arch has two chamfered orders made of Roman or early medieval brick, likely reused, and is topped by a single round-headed window with an early brick surround. Evidence of two former roof lines can be seen on the structure. The lower stage window opening on the west elevation is partly destroyed, but a single lancet window remains at the second stage.
