Description

The Hopkins Monument is a chest tomb located about 0.5 meters west of the Gastrell monument in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. It commemorates John Hopkins, who died in 1790 or possibly 1793. The tomb is made of limestone and features a flat top with a moulded plinth and capping on its base. It has indented corners, and the ends are adorned with fluted returns and a ball frieze. The eastern end displays an urn and foliage, while the western end features a figure of a lady leaning on a pillar. The sides of the tomb are decorated with large raised ovals and large rosettes in the spandrels.
