Description

This is an early 19th-century chest tomb located about 1 meter south-east of the Tainton Monument in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin. The earliest readable inscription dates back to 1816. The tomb is made of limestone and features a flat top with a moulded plinth and capping on the base. It has rounded ends adorned with an acanthus frieze, as well as spiral moulded astragal and torus. The sides are designed with plain flush panels that have quadrant corners. At the time of the survey in November 1984, the tomb was noted to be sinking significantly to the north.
