Description
The Cole Monument is a chest tomb located about 1 meter north of the pair of Pearce Monuments in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin. It features the earliest decipherable inscription to Joseph Cole, who died in 1770, but it likely dates from the early 18th century. The monument is made of limestone and has a flat top with a moulded plinth and capping. The base is built up to the west on bricks and has indented corners. The ends of the tomb are adorned with a spiral moulded astragal and a frieze featuring palmette and anthemion designs above spiral edge oval inscription panels. The sides display diamond-shaped inscription panels with bundles of corn in the corners.
