Description

This listing describes a group of three chest tombs located about 19 meters northwest of the north porch door in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Berkeley. The group includes two unidentified end tombs from the late 17th century and a central tomb dedicated to Robert Smyth from the early 18th century.

The tombs are made of limestone. The southern tomb has a curved top and lacks a visible plinth, while the other two have flat tops with moulded plinths and capping. The two end tombs feature plain sunk end panels and sides that are divided into two similar sections. The Smyth tomb has lyre ends adorned with low relief acanthus returns and small oval panels, with an eroded device inset on the eastern side. The sides of this tomb include small rectangular inscription panels flanked by stylized foliage strips. At the time of the survey in November 1984, all three tombs were partially overgrown.
