Description
This is a pair of 17th-century chest tombs located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, approximately 1 to 2 metres south of the south aisle. They are made of limestone. The tomb closest to the porch is dedicated to John Sm---- and features a plain inscription plaque on the south side, which is almost illegible, flanked by panels with flat-chamfered margins. It has a thick capping. The other chest tomb, located about 4 metres to the northeast, is unidentified. The south side of this tomb is now badly eroded, while the north side is partially eroded and has an oval inscription plaque that is not legible. Both tombs are adorned with carved roses in the spandrels, large cherubs' heads on either side, and decorative brackets with acanthus motifs below each face. They also have lyre-shaped ends with cartouche-like plaques and thick capping with a moulded margin.
