Description

This listing describes a group of four chest tombs located about 6.5 meters northeast of the Clutterbuck Monuments in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Berkeley. The tombs date from the 18th century and include the following inscriptions: Mary Dean, who died in 1804; two unidentified tombs from the late 18th century; and James Phillips, who died in 1761.

The tombs are made of limestone and feature flat tops with moulded plinths and capping. The first tomb has a lozenge shape on a large base with rounded ends, fluted frieze, spiral astragal, and torus details. It includes a snake and urn design with an oval panel on the west side and a raised oval panel on the east. The remaining four sides display tall oval panels surrounded by carved foliage that overlaps at the edges and is tied in a bundle at the top.

The second tomb has lyre ends with oval panels, but the south side has collapsed outward, and the north side is completely eroded, with the tomb sinking badly to the southwest. The third tomb features heavy lyre ends with draped returns and oval inscription panels. Its sides have central inscription panels flanked by foliage reliefs, and the top is breaking up as of the last survey in November 1984. The fourth tomb has additional moulding along the upper edge of the top, indented corners, and end panels with a plain frieze. It also features a cartouche on the east side and a rectangular panel with a rounded projection at the top on the west side, with plain raised rectangular panels on the sides.
