Description
Abwell Farmhouse is a farmhouse with a central core dating from the 17th century, with a mid-19th century extension to the left. The core is constructed of roughcast rubble limestone, while the extension is made of brick. The building has slate roofs with brick stacks, one of which is external and rendered up to the flue level. It is a single-range structure with a rear extension to the stone core, featuring double Roman and pantiled roofs. The farmhouse is two storeys high with an attic and has a five-window front.
The 18th-century wing includes three 12-pane sash windows with moulded wood architraves on the upper floor, and three more on the ground floor, with the two windows to the left having 15 panes. There is a string course made of two bricks in width between the floors. The older section originally had two three-light stone mullion windows with square hoodmoulds, but these have been replaced by 20th-century casements, although the hoodmoulds remain. The corresponding windows on the rear facade are original stone mullions. The door, which was originally central, has been moved to the left below a window. It features a large flat hood supported by brackets, with trellis infill at the sides, and consists of four panels, with the top two being glazed and the lower two fielded.
Inside, the oldest section has a wooden newel stair to the right, partially illuminated by one of the remaining stone windows, and features many beams. There is an archway on the left from the front door leading to the base of the panelled stair. Abwell Cottage, which was built as a 19th-century extension to the right and altered in the mid to late 20th century, is not considered to be of special interest.
