Description

Wanswell Court Farmhouse is a large detached house, originally a farmhouse, dating back to around 1450-60, with significant additions made in the early 16th and 17th centuries. The original core is constructed of a mix of rubble stone and dressed stone, while a 17th-century wing is faced in roughcast with long and short flush quoins. The roofs are covered in Cotswold stone slates, except for a north range which has a plain slate roof, and there are numerous stone stacks.

The original range features a small projecting gable on the left side with a canted bay window on the ground floor. It has a double-chamfered pointed stone archway containing a studded plank and batten door with decorative strap hinges. Two 2-light stone mullion and transom windows are present, one with trefoil heads and the other lower with cinquefoil heads, with a large lateral stack positioned between them. The canted bay window reveals a small panelled room, while the remainder of the original range forms an open hall, measuring 25 feet by 22 feet, featuring a 3-bay collar and tie beam roof with 3 tiers of wind bracing. The west end has an arched entrance to a former screens passage and a 4-centred stone arch leading to a stone spiral stair. A cinquefoiled window at the east end indicates the former high table end and includes a staggered stone window seat and an embattled wall plate, suggesting the possible presence of a former gallery above the parlour. The parlour has a 4-light cinquefoil-head stone mullion window with a king mullion and a moulded stone square hoodmould. This window projects slightly, and squint holes are located in the depth of the wall on either side. Moulded beams are visible within the parlour. A room on the north-east side has elaborately moulded beams and an original stone fireplace. The 17th-century wing has two cross gables to the west, both with coped ends and stone finials. It includes 2 windows with 4-light ovolo-moulded wood mullion and transom windows (leaded) on both the ground and first floors, and 2 or 3-light wood mullions in the attic, all featuring flush quoins. An additional 2-light window is centered to illuminate a new wood staircase. There are two small 20th-century lean-tos on the west wall at ground floor level, both with stone slate roofs. A porch originally stood in front of the main entrance to the hall; it has been removed, and may not originally have been part of the hall, as the adjacent window's hoodmould was partially removed to accommodate the porch wall.
