Description
Acton Hall is a detached country house built in the mid-18th century and extended in the 19th century. It features a brick exterior on a stone plinth, with freestone dressings and a hipped slate roof, along with brick ridge and end stacks. The house has a single front range with two flush gables at the rear, a central projecting lean-to that houses the stairwell, and additional 19th-century brick wings on either side at the back.
The building stands three storeys high with an attic and has five windows arranged in a 1/3/1 pattern, featuring 12-pane sashes with splayed brick voussoirs. The central three windows project slightly and are topped with a stone-moulded pediment that has an oval radial oculus in the tympanum. The central first-floor window is in a Venetian style, adorned with a heavy stone entablature supported by Doric pilasters flanking the side lights, and a moulded stone round-headed central light with interlocking tracery, along with a plain splayed stone apron.
There is a stone sill band at the first floor and a plat band above, which is positioned over four ground floor 12-pane sashes. The central projecting stone portico features two Doric columns on bases and a large plain moulded pediment. The portico has two pilasters at its back and a keystone over a plain door frame. The door itself consists of four glazed panels and two fielded panels, and the portico is accessed via three splayed stone steps. The second floor has five small 6-pane sashes.
Inside, the house retains much of its original joinery, including very fine mahogany panelled doors in the main rooms on the ground and first floors. Some original fireplaces and a stone flag floor are present, along with a stick baluster stair that rises to the second floor, featuring a wreathed and ramped handrail.
